1st Grade Year End Conference

Maevy-girl-

Daddy and I had a quick conference call with Ms. Young yesterday to discuss how your year went.

Here's the re-cap -

Reading-
Still off the charts as far as your reading level. The most obvious problem is finding appropriate content that matches your level. You've really been loving the A to Z mystery series and have been wanting to write to Ron Roy suggesting that he write another series having to do with the days of the week. In school, Ms. Young says you ask great questions and are very engaged. She's enjoyed watching your friendship with Daphne blossom. You are both problem solvers, inquisitive, and love thinking out of the box.

Just the other day - Daphne and you came to Ms. Young frustrated that you weren't completely understanding the book club book for the week...and you both could not figure out what "notorious outlaw" meant even after having researched the words in the dictionary - which Ms. Young - said they probably weren't even in the class dictionary.

She suggested over the summer giving you dictionary or thesaurus challenges - which I thought was a great idea.

Writing-
Ms. Young noted that your writing skills have also been fun to watch develop. You seem to really enjoy journaling and correspondence focused activities. We've been noticing this - you like to leave us notes all over the house, with strict instructions to write you back!

She recommended a journal project and/or pen pal over the summer.

Math-
No major stories, but you grasped all the major concepts just fine. There were couple errors at the end of the year, but they just seemed due to rushing - which seems to be popular among your classmates. Who can finish the first, etc.

Socially -
Ms. Young that you're not afraid to speak up and work well others. She did note that you are more timid and tend to take a back seat when the project or discussion isn't organized or doesn't have a clear focus. I, of course, laughed and said "oh dear - she's a mini-me". Ms. Young asked me what I meant - and I explained disorganized and unfocused tasks can cause us anxiety and it's easier to disengage than deal with the chaos. It's a little nuts that you are already showing signs of this in 1st grade!

I asked -
if your show off - attitude got better - she said absolutely,
if your time management skills were fine - she said yes, and
if she would still recommend you for the Encore program - she said absolutely.

For 2nd grade-
Ms. Young just recommended that I look at the 2nd standards to see what all to expect, but she has no worries about your level of preparation or ability to succeed in the classroom.

We've really enjoyed having Ms. Young this year and hope you love and enjoy your 2nd grade teacher just as much. Now off to plan to your summer challenges!

As always - Mom and Dad are crazy proud of you. Keep up the great work!
